Wood is not concrete. We do not clean it like concrete.

Most damage we see on Brentwood decks did not come from weather. It came from someone with a rented pressure washer and a narrow tip, furring the boards and carving wand marks into the wood. Wood needs low pressure and the right cleaner, then a brightener to open the grain and bring the color back.

Our process starts with a wood cleaner that lifts the gray, dead wood fibers, mildew and old failing stain. We rinse at low pressure, working with the grain, and then apply a brightener that neutralizes the cleaner and restores the natural tone. The deck dries to the color it was when it was built, with the grain open and ready for stain or sealer.

When to clean, when to stain

A deck should be cleaned every year and restained every two to four years depending on sun exposure. If water no longer beads on the boards, the stain has failed and the wood is drinking rain. That is when gray sets in and boards start to check and splinter. Cleaning and brightening resets the clock.

We clean first and let the wood dry. If you want it stained, we will tell you honestly whether the wood is ready or whether a board or two should be replaced first. Fences follow the same rule: cleaned fences last years longer than fences left to weather.

Pressure settings we use on wood

• Softwood decks and fences: 500 to 1,200 psi with a wide fan tip, always with the grain.
• Hardwoods and composite: lower still, with the right cleaner for the material.
• Never a narrow tip, never close to the board.
